I am a New Zealand-based author whose work spans academic research to editorials, features articles, and literary nonfiction. There are strong threads of empathy, social justice, and passion for shedding light on the most vulnerable people in our society in my writing on class, homelessness, LGBTQ people, first-in-the-family students (or first-generation college students), and mental health.

Meet Teresa

I was raised near Wooster, a small city in rural northeastern Ohio. Even as a young girl, I would spend hours looking at maps, dreaming of the places I would someday like to go. I used to wait impatiently for my letters from my English penfriend when I was a teenager. Now, I’ve realised my dream of working and teaching around the world. However, there are always new things to learn, and places to see! My goal is to never stop learning and growing as I use my experiences and knowledge to help others.

Books

I have co-edited three books: Harvey, V. L., & Housel, T. H. (Eds.). Left Out: Health Care Issues Facing LGBT People (Lexington Books, 2014); Harvey, V. L., & Housel, T. H. (Eds.). Faculty and first-generation college students: Bridging the classroom gap together (Jossey-Bass, 2011); and Housel, T. H., & Harvey, V. L. (Eds.).The invisibility factor: Administrators and faculty reach out to first-generation college students. (Brown Walker Press, 2010). My book (with Vickie Harvey), Intersections of Marginality for First-Generation College Students, is forthcoming in 2018 from Peter Lang.

Research

My research in the areas of homelessness, the politics of housing, media and globalization, alternative media, and first-in-the-family university students (known as first-generation college students in the U.S.) have appeared in venues such as the Chronicle of Higher Education, Critical Studies in Media Communication, Information, Communication & Society, and Journal of Critical Inquiry.

Design

My design work includes work for newspapers and magazines. I currently design the Lower Hutt Women’s Centre’s quarterly newsletter and the parish magazine for St. James Anglican Church in Lower Hutt, New Zealand.
