Meet Teresa

I am a New Zealand-based author whose work spans academic research to editorials, features articles, and literary nonfiction. There is a strong thread between my writing on class, homelessness, LGBTQ people, and mental illness.

I was raised near Wooster, a small city in rural northeastern Ohio. I was fortunate that my father purchased many books for the house. Most of the books were from various National Geographic series and contained atlases. I spent hours staring at the maps, dreaming of the places I hoped to someday go.

I’m thankful for the quiet and fresh air of my childhood home, but reading books exposed me to many different worlds. By age 8 I was voraciously writing short stories, poems, and later, novels by the time I was 11 years old.

I attended Oberlin College, an undergraduate university as a first-in-the-family student.

My formative years gave me a deep understanding and genuine empathy for people who are silenced or marginalised in society in some way. When I write about class, homelessness, mental illness, and LGBT people, I have an intense passion for uncovering the lies that keep people feeling locked in.

“I grew up in a home filled with books, newspapers, and magazines. Reading exposed me to different worlds and taught me the value of knowledge and education.”
